What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a procedure to save a tooth whose inner pulp — the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — has become infected or irreversibly inflamed due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma. Left untreated, a pulp infection progresses to a painful abscess and ultimately results in tooth loss. RCT removes the infected tissue, seals the canals, and preserves the tooth.
Contrary to its reputation, a root canal treatment performed with modern anaesthesia and technique is no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. The procedure eliminates the source of infection and the intense pain associated with it. Most patients are relieved to find the procedure is far more comfortable than the toothache that preceded it.

Persistent throbbing pain — especially pain that worsens at night — indicates pulp infection. RCT is the definitive treatment to eliminate infection and relieve pain permanently.
When a cavity has penetrated through enamel and dentine into the pulp chamber, the nerve tissue is irreversibly inflamed and must be removed.
A crack extending into the root canal system allows bacteria to reach the pulp. RCT removes infected tissue and seals the canal before the crack progresses further.
A fall or impact can sever the nerve's blood supply, causing pulp necrosis weeks or months later. RCT saves the tooth before it becomes infected.
Persistent pain after removing a hot stimulus is a classic sign of irreversible pulpitis that requires root canal treatment to resolve.
If insufficient tooth structure remains to support a crown after treatment, extraction and implant or bridge replacement is the more appropriate clinical choice.
Some patients, after full information, prefer extraction over multi-visit RCT. This is a valid choice — your dentist will discuss all replacement options with you.
Mild, short-lived cold sensitivity (not lingering) may indicate reversible pulpitis that can resolve with a filling or desensitising treatment rather than a full root canal.

Diagnosis & Treatment Planning
The dentist examines the tooth, assesses the extent of infection, and determines the number of canals and visits required. An X-ray may be reviewed to understand root canal anatomy.
Local Anaesthesia
A thorough local anaesthetic block is administered to ensure the tooth and surrounding area is completely numb. You should feel no pain during the procedure — only occasional vibration or pressure.
Access Opening & Pulp Removal
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected and inflamed pulp tissue is removed from the chamber and canals using precision instruments.
Canal Shaping, Cleaning & Irrigation
The canals are shaped using rotary files to allow thorough irrigation. Antimicrobial solutions flush out bacteria, debris, and tissue remnants from within the root canal system.
Canal Filling & Temporary Restoration
Once clean and dry, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling is placed to protect the access opening between visits.
Aftercare for Root Canal Treatment
Follow these guidelines after your treatment to ensure the best possible healing and long-term results.
Take All Prescribed Medications
Complete the full antibiotic course and take pain relief as directed. Do not stop antibiotics early even if symptoms have improved.
Avoid Chewing on the Treated Tooth
The tooth has a temporary restoration and is vulnerable to fracture. Avoid using it for chewing until the permanent crown is placed.
Expect 2–3 Days of Mild Soreness
Tenderness around the treated tooth for a few days is completely normal. Prescribed pain relief and ice packs manage this comfortably.
Do Not Delay the Crown
A root-canal-treated tooth must be crowned. Delaying more than a few weeks significantly increases the risk of the tooth fracturing beyond repair.
Maintain Oral Hygiene Around the Tooth
Brush and floss around the treated area gently. Do not avoid it — plaque control is still essential even on a non-vital tooth.
