What is Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While the priority in dentistry is always to preserve natural teeth, extraction becomes necessary when a tooth is too severely decayed to restore, when advanced gum disease has made a tooth unstable, when a tooth is fractured beyond repair, or as part of orthodontic space creation.
Simple extractions involve teeth that are fully erupted and visible. The tooth is loosened with an elevator instrument and removed with forceps under local anaesthesia. Surgical extractions involve teeth that are broken, impacted, or have curved roots requiring more complex surgical technique — a small incision in the gum and sometimes bone removal.

When decay has destroyed so much tooth structure that restoration is no longer feasible, extraction is the only appropriate course of action.
Advanced periodontitis with significant bone loss and tooth mobility may render a tooth unsaveable. Extraction prevents infection spreading to adjacent teeth and bone.
When an abscess is present in a tooth that cannot be saved, extraction removes the infection source and provides rapid, permanent relief from the pain and swelling.
Planned extraction of specific premolars creates the space needed for orthodontic alignment in severely crowded cases — a common and predictable part of comprehensive treatment.
Baby teeth that fail to shed naturally, or deciduous teeth blocking permanent eruption, are extracted to allow the permanent teeth to emerge correctly.
Extraction should always be the last resort. If a tooth is restorable with RCT and a crown, every effort should be made to save the natural tooth before considering removal.
Mildly discoloured or imperfect teeth that are structurally healthy should never be extracted for cosmetic reasons — veneers or crowns are the appropriate alternative.
In some cases of severe acute infection, antibiotics are prescribed first to reduce the acute phase before extraction proceeds — your dentist will advise on the right sequencing.

The dentist examines the tooth and assesses the complexity of the extraction. The procedure is explained in detail, including risks, expected recovery, and tooth replacement options to consider afterwards.
Local Anaesthesia
A thorough local anaesthetic block is administered. You will feel no pain during the procedure — only occasional pressure and vibration as the tooth is loosened and removed.
Loosening (Elevation)
An elevator instrument is used to gently loosen the tooth from its periodontal ligament — the tissue fibres that attach the tooth to the bone. This step makes removal smooth and atraumatic.
Extraction
Dental forceps grip the tooth and remove it with controlled movements. For surgical extractions, a small gum incision provides access, bone may be trimmed, and the tooth is sectioned if needed.
Socket Care & Aftercare Instructions
The socket is packed with gauze, and you receive comprehensive written aftercare instructions covering diet, hygiene, pain management, and healing expectations. A follow-up check is scheduled at your home.
Aftercare for Tooth Extraction
Follow these guidelines after your treatment to ensure the best possible healing and long-term results.
Bite Firmly on Gauze for 30–45 Minutes
Keep sustained pressure on the gauze pad provided. Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for 24 hours — these actions dislodge the clot and cause dry socket.
Apply Ice Packs for the First 6 Hours
Apply an ice pack to the outer cheek — 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off — to minimise post-extraction swelling and bruising.
Take Medications as Prescribed
Begin pain relief before the anaesthesia wears off — do not wait until pain sets in. Complete the full antibiotic course if prescribed.
Follow a Soft Food Diet for 3–5 Days
Eat soft foods — soups, yoghurt, mashed potato, scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that irritate or disturb the healing socket.
Do Not Smoke for at Least 72 Hours
Smoking is the leading cause of dry socket — a painful condition where the healing clot is lost. This is the single most critical aftercare instruction.
Contact Us If Pain Increases After Day 3
Pain that worsens rather than improves after 3 days, especially with a foul taste or smell, indicates dry socket or infection — call us immediately.
